Surf Sports
The Sport of Lifesaving has a long and proud history within the Surf Life Saving community and continues to play a significant role in ensuring that out members have the ability, confidence and passion to meet the challenging environments which Surf Life Saving delivers its essential lifesaving service.
Lifesaving Sport competitions are enjoyed by our young Junior Surf members from the age of seven through to our experienced Masters. Like all sports delivered in Aotearoa, we have an amazing support network of Coaches, Officials, Team Managers and many more volunteers that bind sport together and deliver a Great "Experience" for everyone involved.Surf Lifesaving Sport offers a wide range of event disciplines and competitions for members to enjoy, socialize and have fun with friends and family. Whether it's in the swimming pool competing in a wide range of pool rescue events, in our large crafts being surf boats, IRB's and canoes to our nippers doing surf swimming and body boarding, we have something for everyone to try and enjoy.

Local competitions (Christchurch) run from October through till March & move around the different beaches on our coastline. Then there are also Southern Champs and National Championship competitions.
See Surf Lifesaving NZ - Homepage for event rules and more information.
IRB RACING
A fast paced and highly entertaining sport!
The crews race through the surf and navigate the course as fast they can to rescue their patients in a series of simulated rescues to earn themselves a place race finals. The races include Mass Rescue, Tube Rescue, Single Rescue, Teams Event and Assembly.
IRB racing combines precision skill, strength, agility and endurance. The race discipline helps our members develop and maintain their fitness and skill set in the rescue boats to ensure they are always rescue ready when they are needed most.

You can start getting involved in the sport as soon as you have gained the Surf Lifeguard Award as a patient and then progress through to Crew and Driver roles as you gain those qualifications.

Sumner SLSC offers progressive training, development and support for all levels within the sport. We welcome any Lifeguarding members to come and give it a go and get involved with our close knit squad.
CANOE
Sumner Canoeing
We have a four-person canoe at our Club that is now well and truly out of hibernation. It might not be the most important piece of kit in itself our Surf Life Saving tool box, but you are and it's:
A great way to keep fit
Understand the surf environment better
Get to know your fellow members and those of other Clubs
Have fun
Everyone is very welcome to have a go. We please ask that you are a fully refreshed lifeguard and that if you want to compete in the canoe in Carnivals have completed the pre-requisite patrolling hours (either have or are on target to complete 20 hours of active patrolling per season).
We have a Club Policy on use of the canoe that everyone must read before using (insert link); in particular, bungs, put them in…
POOL CHAMPS
Pool Rescue is held over the autumn/winter months (Terms 2/3s) and is officially the first events of the new season. It provides a great opportunity for members to increase their swimming capability and train in a range of rescue type events in the pool. Events include diving under obstacles (represents a wave) in the water, carrying bricks/manikins through the water, tube rescues, fin swimming and line throws, all of which simulate rescue situations.
Some events are different between junior and seniors.

There is limited lane space, so numbers are limited but it is generally open to club members 10 years and over, those that have a good swimming ability and those keen to attend competitions.
Training is normally Thursday evenings.
See Surf Lifesaving NZ - Homepage for event rules and more information.

SUMNER ALSO ARE THE CURRENT SOUTHERN REGION JUNIOR AND SENIOR CHAMPIONS!!
